In my previous posts I have also already talked about what artificial intelligence is, how machines learn and the history of artificial intelligence. And in this post I am going to discuss the different types of artificial intelligence.
But before we dive into the different types of AI we must look at the criteria for categorising AI systems.
Primarily the AI system intelligence is compared to the human level of intelligence. To what extent is the AI system able to mimic human intelligence?
Based on these parameters, artificial intelligence is of three types:
- Weak or narrow AI
- Strong or Generalised AI
- Super or conscious AI
Narrow AI
As the name suggests, narrow AI systems are the weakest AI systems and they exhibit intelligence in a specific domain or task. They are the expert systems we talked about while discussing the developmental phases of artificial intelligence. Like human experts, the weak or narrow AI systems are experts in solving a specific problem based on the inputs given to it.
Some applications of narrow AI would be:
- Language translators
- Spam filters
- AI-assisted research
- Autonomous vehicles
- Recommendation engines
Some examples of such weak AI systems that are already in use:
- Chat bots
- Self driving cars
- Delivery drones
- Research assistants
- Voice assistants like Siri or Alexa
- Robots
- Predictive maintenance systems
Strong AI
Strong AI or Generalised AI performance at human level of intelligence. Technologically it is a combination of multiple AI strategies that are capable of learning on their own. After operating successfully for some time, strong AI systems can develop new strategies on their own. Strong AI is still in the developmental phase and researchers are working on it.
Super AI
Super AI or conscious AI is an artificial intelligence system that is aware of its own existence. It is better than humans in decision-making and problem-solving. It has faster stimuli processing capabilities than humans. Conscious AI is a hypothetical system because it is still in the theoretical phase of development. Consciousness is still not defined adequately for it to be implemented through algorithms.
Super AI is what makes up the dystopian science-fiction we come across so frequently. Fiction where robots are better than humans, take over humans in all their activities and some of those who turn negative try to kill the human race.
I hope after today you will know that this is science fiction and not scientific development on the anvil.
Final thoughts
To sum up,
- Narrow AI systems are what we see around us and use frequently in every walk of our lives, from online transactions and entertainment to education and healthcare.
- Strong AI matches human intelligence and is in developmental phase
- Super AI is conscious of its existence and still a theoretical concept
